The SBEnrc Industry Research Forum on Decarbonisation through Sustainable Procurement took place on 21 November 2024 at Western Sydney University, in conjunction with the International Conference on Construction Project Management and Construction Engineering (iCCPMCE 2024). The event was led by Associate Professor Yingbin Feng and supported by SBEnrc.

This engaging forum showcased key findings from the SBEnrc P2.96 Achieving Decarbonisation by Reducing Embodied Carbon through Procurement, emphasising the critical role of procurement in driving decarbonisation efforts across the building and infrastructure sectors.

The forum was facilitated by Distinguished Professor Vivian Tam, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering. The event began with an inspiring welcome and thematic overview from Davina Rooney, CEO of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). Professor Keith Hampson, CEO of SBEnrc, introduced the SBEnrc’s vision, the forum’s purpose, and its esteemed guests. The core presentation was delivered by Associate Professor Yingbin Feng, the project leader, alongside Mohamed Abdellah, a PhD candidate at WSU and Commercial Manager at Transport for NSW. They shared the key findings and industry outcomes from the SBEnrc project 2.96.

The forum concluded with a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Davina Rooney, featuring prominent industry and research leaders. The panel included Teresa Scott, Executive Director of the Australasian Procurement and Construction Council; Mohamed Abdellah; and Associate Professor Yingbin Feng. Their discussions delved deeper into the challenges and opportunities in decarbonisation through procurement.

The forum reinforces the importance of research-driven solutions in achieving Australia’s decarbonisation goals and need for government, industry and academia collaborations.

We extend our gratitude to the speakers, panellists, participants and iCCPMCE2024 conference organisers for making this event a success and for their contributions to advancing sustainable procurement practices in the built environment.
