Join us for the 2025 SBEnrc National Industry Research Workshops

The Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre’s series of National Industry Research Workshops (NIRW) is held around Australia every 12-18 months to gain industry’s perspective on the built environment business challenges and innovation needs, and to continually refresh our ongoing Centre research program.

Our 2025 NIRW will be held in Brisbane (11th August), Sydney (12th August), Melbourne (13th August), and Perth (14th August) from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm local time.

Purpose of the Workshops

SBEnrc is committed to ensuring its research priorities represent its partners’ needs and align with industry needs. New projects will be developed over the next few months for commencement in March 2026. The workshops are part of a national consultative process allowing our partners (industry and government) to bring to the table their business challenges and explore how applied research can address them.

The workshops bring together our existing core partners (industry, government and research) with other players in the built environment to brainstorm ideas to generate future research themes.

The SBEnrc Governing Board has indicated it is looking for research themes that provide fresh industry engagement, strong industry value in the deliverables, and demonstrate innovative research leadership to built environment research.

What we are trying to achieve

Jointly develop research themes that align with our partners’ business challenges. It is anticipated that fresh research projects would build on the experience and expertise of our industry, government and research partners in the Centre’s priority areas – ‘Greening the Built Environment’, ‘People, Processes and Procurement’ and ‘Productivity through Innovation’. The three research streams broadly focus on environmental, social and economic sustainability, as key areas that will drive productivity and development in the built environment industry.

The process

Workshop attendees around the country will be invited to present research ideas that are directly relevant to their identified business challenges. Following this, break-out groups will discuss and formulate potential research project themes that address the industry challenges and draw on SBEnrc’s national and international research capabilities.

A series of theme-focused workshops will follow in the following weeks for participants to review proposed research activity going forward and structure a project scope.

Outcomes

SBEnrc management will collate these potential project ideas and provide a summary to the SBEnrc Governing Board to inform their consideration of future research project investment for 2026 – 2027.
