2024 - 2026
The building and infrastructure sectors are under significant scrutiny from regulators, investors, and the public to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. This is driven by a growing awareness of the environmental impacts of construction activities, the need for greater social equity, and the demand for transparent governance practices. The aim of this project is to enhance the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in building and infrastructure project procurement. By conducting a comprehensive national industry survey, investigating the selection processes of procurement models and strategies, and examining methodologies for creating and measuring social value, this research seeks to provide actionable insights and best practices that will support sustainable and socially responsible procurement decision-making for building and infrastructure projects in Australia. The outcomes of this project will equip industry stakeholders with the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed and responsible procurement decisions that align with the ESG principles.
The specific objectives of this project are:
This project expects to deliver the following outcomes for the industry:

Western Sydney University hosted the WSU–SBEnrc Workshop in June 2026, an event that brought together leading minds in the built environment sector. Professor Dr. Keith Hampson, CEO, and Will Hackney, COO, of the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc), joined WSU academics and researchers to explore innovative industry research and collaboration opportunities.
The workshop served as a platform for dynamic discussions on advancing sustainable practices in the built environment. Distinguished Professor Brian Falzon, Dean of the School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment at WSU, announced the appointment of Professor Keith Hampson as a Visiting Professor at the university. This strategic appointment strengthens the partnership between SBEnrc and WSU, fostering greater collaboration in addressing critical challenges in sustainability and engineering.
Srinath Perera presented the Centre for Smart Modern Construction (c4SMC). The event has set the stage for further engagement, with anticipation building for the SBEnrc National Industry Research Workshops in August. These initiatives underscore a shared commitment to driving impactful research and fostering industry-academia partnerships.
